ACH and eCheck

Bank debit setup, the fields it needs, and how to handle the days between acceptance and clearance.

Before you start

  • ACH must be enabled on your merchant account. Ask your processor if the option is missing.
  • ACH is a United States bank network. It does not apply to other countries.
  • The Pro plan or above is required.

Enabling it

  1. Open the plugin settings and enable ACH as a payment method.
  2. Choose which account types you accept: checking, savings, or both, personal and business.
  3. Set the SEC code. WEB is standard for online consumer debits, CCD for business accounts.
  4. Write the checkout description yourself, stating clearly how long clearance takes.

Order status and clearance

An accepted ACH debit is not a settled payment. Orders are placed on hold with the transaction recorded, and should not be treated as paid until the debit clears, typically two to five business days.

// Recommended fulfilment policy Low value orders ship on acceptance, accept the risk High value orders hold until cleared, then fulfil

Returns

A debit can be returned after acceptance. The common codes are R01 insufficient funds, R02 account closed and R03 no account found. Until automatic return handling ships, reconcile ACH orders against your gateway before dispatching anything valuable.

Stored bank accounts

A verified account can be saved to the Customer Vault and reused, including for subscription renewals. The clearance delay applies to every charge, including renewals, so schedule accordingly.

Refunds

An ACH refund is a credit back to the same account. It cannot be voided once submitted and takes several days to arrive. For a same day correction, contact your processor rather than issuing a credit.
