Installation

From an empty plugins screen to a completed test order, in about ten minutes.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.4 or newer, PHP 8.0 or newer
  • WooCommerce 8.0 or newer
  • An SSL certificate on the checkout, which is required for hosted fields
  • A merchant account on a gateway running the NMI platform
  • WooCommerce Subscriptions, only if you need recurring billing

Installing the free version

  1. In WordPress go to Plugins, Add New and search for NMI for WooCommerce.
  2. Install and activate. Nothing is written to your database until you save settings.
  3. Go to WooCommerce, Settings, Payments and open the NMI entry.

Installing a paid plan

  1. Download the zip from your account dashboard after purchase.
  2. Go to Plugins, Add New, Upload Plugin and select the zip.
  3. Activate, then paste your licence key under WooCommerce, Settings, Payments, NMI, Licence.
  4. Press Activate licence. The domain is registered against your account automatically.

The free and paid versions are the same plugin. If the free version is already installed, uploading the paid zip replaces it and your settings are preserved.

Connecting your gateway

You need two values from your gateway portal, covered in detail under gateway credentials.

// Example settings Gateway URL https://secure.yourgateway.com/api/transact.php Security key ••••••••••••••••••••••4f2a Mode Sandbox Transaction Authorize

Press Test connection. A successful test returns your merchant ID and the modules enabled on the account. If it fails, see troubleshooting before changing anything else.

Your first test order

  1. Set mode to sandbox. A banner appears on the checkout so nobody mistakes it for live.
  2. Buy a cheap product using the card 4111 1111 1111 1111, any future expiry and CVV 999.
  3. Open the order and confirm the note contains an auth code and a transaction ID.
  4. Refund part of the order and confirm the refund appears in your gateway.

Going live

  1. Replace the sandbox credentials with your production key and endpoint.
  2. Switch mode to live and save.
  3. Place one real order with your own card, then refund it.

Keep the sandbox credentials somewhere safe. You will want them again on staging.
