How it works
The vault record is created once and referenced afterwards.
- Buyer ticks save at checkoutThe card is tokenized as usual, then that token is attached to a vault customer record instead of being discarded after the sale.
- The token is stored against the WordPress userYour database gets the vault ID, brand, last four and expiry. Enough to display, not enough to charge anywhere else.
- Later charges reference the recordCheckout, renewals and admin charges all send the vault ID rather than a card, so the buyer never re-enters anything.
Expiring cards are the silent churn
A stored card eventually expires, and the renewal fails. Account Updater support from your processor keeps tokens fresh automatically, and surfacing that in the plugin is on the roadmap. Until then, the retry and customer notification flow covers it.
