How it works

A subscription touches the gateway at three separate moments.

  • First payment and vaultingThe initial order is charged and the card is stored in the vault in the same flow, so no second authorization is needed later.
  • Each scheduled renewalWooCommerce triggers the renewal, the plugin charges the vault token as a merchant initiated transaction, and the order is created and paid automatically.
  • Changes and cancellationsSwitching plans, pausing or cancelling updates the schedule locally. There is nothing to keep in sync manually inside the gateway.

You may not need WooCommerce Subscriptions at all

NMI has its own recurring engine. For simple plans without proration or switching, native recurring would avoid the cost of the Subscriptions extension entirely. That is on the roadmap, and worth telling us if it matters to you.

Do I need the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension?
Yes, for now. The plugin integrates with it rather than replacing it. Native gateway recurring is planned for simpler cases.
What happens to existing subscriptions if I switch gateway?
The stored tokens belong to the old gateway and cannot be moved. New subscriptions vault against NMI, and existing ones need customers to update their payment method.
Are renewals affected by 3D Secure?
Merchant initiated renewals are generally exempt because the initial transaction carried the authentication. Regional rules vary, so test in sandbox.
Can subscriptions be paid by ACH?
Yes. A verified bank account can be stored and charged on schedule, allowing for the clearance delay on each renewal.
