Two things make supplements hard to process
The first is continuity billing: monthly supply, autoship, subscribe and save. The second is the category history of aggressive free-trial offers, which taught issuers to look closely at anything coded as supplements. Legitimate brands inherit that suspicion, which shows up as more declines and a lower tolerance for chargebacks.
What that means in practice
- Aggregators frequently classify supplements as high risk, and an account can close with little warning.
- Recurring charges are refused more often when they are flagged incorrectly, because issuers are strict on this category.
- Disputes cluster on the second and third shipments, when the customer forgot they subscribed.
The setup that survives
- A merchant account underwritten for nutraceuticals, in your own name, on a gateway you keep when you change processor.
- Renewals flagged as merchant initiated with the original agreement referenced. This single detail moves the renewal approval rate more than anything else.
- An email before every shipment charge. A charge the customer expects is not a dispute.
- One click cancellation, honoured immediately. Fighting a cancellation costs more than the shipment.
- A dunning sequence that reads the decline reason instead of retrying blindly. See the dunning playbook.
What the plugin adds
- ✓ Customer Vault storage so autoship charges do not need the customer present
- ✓ Correct flags on every renewal, so issuers see a recognised recurring charge
- ✓ Fraud rules by order value, to screen first orders harder than repeats
- ✓ Refunds and voids from the WooCommerce order screen, before a refund becomes a chargeback
- ✓ ACH for wholesale and practitioner accounts
The number to watch
Involuntary churn, meaning subscribers lost to failed cards rather than to choice. In this category it is routinely the largest source of cancellations, and it is fixable with an account updater and a decent retry schedule. The details are in the card lifecycle post.
