Why the mainstream processors decline the category
Firearms, ammunition and accessories are prohibited by PayPal, Square, Stripe and WooCommerce Payments as a matter of policy, not law. A licensed dealer running a lawful business is refused for the same reason as anyone else: aggregators will not underwrite the category at all. The route open to you is a merchant account underwritten specifically for firearms, on a gateway that connects to your store.
What underwriting will ask for
- Your FFL, and the licences of the dealers you ship to.
- What you sell, item by item. Serialised firearms, ammunition, optics and apparel are not all treated alike.
- Your shipping and transfer process, including how you verify the receiving FFL.
- Age verification at checkout.
- Average order value and your typical delivery time.
The payments detail that matters most here
Orders often cannot ship immediately: a transfer has to be arranged, a background check completed, or stock allocated. That gap makes authorisation timing the central question. An authorisation expires in about seven days, so for anything that ships later, take the payment or store the card, rather than holding an expiring authorisation and hoping.
| Ships in | Take payment how |
|---|---|
| Same week | Authorise at checkout, capture when it leaves |
| Later, or awaiting transfer | Charge a deposit and store the card for the balance |
| Backorder, no date | Charge in full with a clear, written refund promise |
What the plugin gives a firearms store
- ✓ Authorise now, capture on dispatch, from the WooCommerce order screen
- ✓ Saved cards for the balance on a transfer, without holding the number yourself
- ✓ AVS and CVV policy plus velocity limits, tuned per order value
- ✓ ACH for dealer and wholesale orders, at a flat fee instead of a percentage
- ✓ Level II and Level III data on purchasing cards, for range, agency and dealer accounts
- ✓ Works with any NMI-powered gateway, including the white-label ones specialist acquirers issue
Keeping the account
Ship what was approved, keep the descriptor recognisable, and answer support before a customer calls their bank. High-risk accounts are lost on chargeback ratios far more often than on volume, so read the screening tools and how disputes are won early rather than after the first one.
Not sure who runs your gateway? Check whether it is NMI underneath — many specialist acquirers resell it under their own brand.
