Selling to businesses, priced like it.
B2B orders are larger, less frequent and often paid on terms. That changes which payment features matter: bank transfer, purchasing card data, and authorizations you capture when the goods actually ship.
Level III and multiple MIDs are Enterprise features. ACH is included from Pro.
What usually hurts
The problems merchants in this category describe, and what answers each one.
Card fees on large orders
A percentage fee on a four thousand dollar order is real money. ACH costs a flat fee, which is why B2B buyers often prefer it anyway.
Commercial cards at standard rates
Purchasing cards qualify for lower interchange when line item data travels with the transaction. Without it you pay the higher tier by default.
Charging before shipping
Long lead times mean the money should not move until the goods do. Authorize at order, capture at dispatch, with partial capture for split shipments.
Quotes and phone orders
Not every B2B sale starts in a cart. Payment links and a virtual terminal are on the roadmap for exactly this.
How to set it up
The configuration that fits this kind of store.
- Turn on ACH and set expectationsOffer bank transfer beside card and explain the clearance window on the checkout page. Hold fulfilment on large orders until it clears.
- Enable Level IIIAdd product codes to your catalogue so the line item data is meaningful, then confirm with your processor that the account is configured for it.
- Set the transaction type to authorizeCapture at dispatch instead of at checkout, with partial capture for orders that ship in stages.
- Add a purchase order fieldBusiness buyers often need a PO reference on the transaction. It passes through as Level II data.
ACH paid for the licence in a week. Our average order is over four hundred dollars, so the card fees were most of the margin.
